Utilize a die to thread both custom and standard barrels to accommodate recoil compensators. Employ a plug tap to chase existing threads or to tap custom compensators. Unthreaded compensators should be drilled using a 3-5/64 inches HSS drill bit, followed by reaming to a diameter of 0.551 inches before threading with the appropriate tap. Machine barrels to approximately 0.002 inches smaller than the thread diameter. A 0.575-40 thread is compatible with most commercial, tapered-sleeve or integral cone-style compensators. A 0.685-40 thread is used to fit compensators to threaded bull and hybrid barrels.
